The main ingredient in many cough syrups and medicines is DXM. DXM acts as a cough suppressant in moderate or low doses, but in high doses way over the recommended dose of these cold tablets/cough medicine, it acts as a dissociative like PCP. Both DXM and PCP act similarly on the brain –they are dissociative drugs and cause hallucinations, euphoria, etcetera. Other drugs in this family include nitrous oxide and ketamine, which are used as anesthetics. Dissociatives basically block signals from the mind to other parts of the brain and body, giving the user the many various effects of the drug (hallucinations, euphoria, sedation and drowsiness, etc). They attach to various receptors in the brain to give their effects (like the NMDA receptor). Products like these are bad to abuse because they can be addictive and can cause brain damage called Olney’s lesions. Also, many people report the experiences to be scary and overpowering.
